College of Social Sciences

Since 1911, the University has grown to impact every facet of our region. As our rapidly changing social landscape continues to pose new challenges, a foundation in the social sciences creates a greater capacity to find creative solutions at a time when our complex world calls for it most. From the study of historical, political, social, and cultural issues, to projections for our future, the College of Social Sciences’ (COSS) programs are designed to develop essential skills necessary to provide leadership for the future and change our world. The college seeks to instill a concern for human values and civic responsibility, and its students graduate to become the next generation of judges, city planners, elected officials, researchers, business people, teachers, lawyers, law enforcement officers, and government officials.

Dean's Circle

Many important learning experiences take place outside the classroom. Gifts to the College of Social Sciences Dean's Circle funds internships, supports student research, and allows students to participate in conferences and engage in other vital experiences that enhance their education.

COSS Emerging Scholars

The College of Social Sciences Emerging Scholars program provides undergraduate students with meaningful, hands-on learning experiences through close faculty mentorship. Designed to be inclusive and supportive, the program offers students paid opportunities to participate in research, creative projects, or community-focused work connected to their interests—or to help them discover new academic or career directions.

The program intentionally supports students who may not have had access to research opportunities before or who may not have seen themselves as researchers or scholars. By recognizing and building on students' strengths, the program helps them develop confidence, skills, and a sense of belonging in the academic community.

Student scholars work alongside a COSS faculty mentor on research, creative, or community outreach projects designed by the faculty member. The program concludes with a COSS Emerging Scholars Research Symposium where student scholars present their work through a research poster—celebrating their accomplishments and sharing what they have learned with the campus community.
